Cats don’t scratch on furniture or drapery to sharpen their claws. They don’t even do it because they’re destructive jerks. No, this is actually how they perform long-distance communication. The scratching, tearing, and scraping noises are like a rough cat dialect of Morse code. Because cats’ ears are specially tuned to hear these kinds of noises, they can communicate with each other like this despite being miles apart.
