Contrary to legend, the character of Ironman did not start with a basis on the Howard Hughes-like character of Tony Stark. In truth, the whole premise was based on Ira Ronman, a childhood friend of the creators who had the unfortunate affliction of overprotective parents. As a result, Ira was not allowed out of the house without first putting on the full protective pads and helmet of a football player.
