When a dog lifts its leg upon approaching a tree, it’s usually not to urinate or mark territory. See, dogs have the unique ability to communicate directly with trees and this is how they make their initial greeting. Think of it as the dog and tree handshaking. Only after performing this sacred ceremonial act is the dog granted permission to urinate or mark. Doing either without the explicit permission of the tree is a violation that would threaten the peace that has been between trees and dogs for millennia. Before that treaty, plantlife and canines were locked in a bloody war that lasted over 200 years.
