It’s a little known fact that on leap years, you’re not actually supposed to increment your age. You’re supposed to report the same age for an extra year. Then the following year, you skip, or leap over the age you were supposed to have been. So, for example, if you’re 8 years old and it’s currently a leap year, you don’t get a birthday and you keep telling everyone that you’re 8. Then, next year, you get a birthday and you turn 10.
This was common practice for centuries, up until the Children’s Birthday Revolt of 1804.
