Notebooks were originally developed to prevent people from reading. The idea was that if you fill a book with blank sheets of paper, a potential book enthusiast would pick up the “not book” and get discouraged when they discovered it was full of nothingness.

This was an idea developed and executed by the Union of Not Reading Every Article Drafted. What the U.N.R.E.A.D. didn’t count on was some folks simply filling the pages with their own words. They tried to double-down on their effort and rebrand the books as “naughty books”, figuring that people would either see that as a signal to avoid books or succumb to base desires and open the books, only to be discouraged once more.

This strategy would have worked, but the Union made a critical mistake. Not being fond of words, they misspelled the name of their books as “not-e-books”. Of course, people simply overlooked the hyphens and called them notebooks. Then they started to fill them with words and pictures… sometimes naughty ones.
